What is mixing?

Processes involved in mixing include:

  • Balancing levels between individual elements of the song, including using automation to change the levels in different parts of the song.
  • Using panning to position elements within the stereo field.
  • Using EQ to balance the frequency range of different elements so that they sit well together, as well as adjusting the tone of the song’s parts
  • Compression is used to control the dynamic range of instruments and alter the sound.
  • Effects such as reverb, delay, and chorus can be used to make a mix more interesting as well as help things blend in with the track.
  • Overall, a mix affects the relationship among the various instruments within the song. A mix for your song will balance the levels, frequencies, dynamics, and stereo image, providing a polished sound to the listener. A good quality mix will tie up the relationships between arrangements, instruments, and perspectives in the song.

Currently, we are offering both attended and unattended mixing sessions.

BEFORE SENDING YOUR MIX: WHAT TO CONSIDER?

Preparing Your Mix

When you send your files, please provide us with as many mix notes as possible regarding production, mixing effects, and reference links to songs you’d like the mix to emulate. We require WAV or AIFF files (44.1, 48, 88.2, or 96 kHz). These should be bounced from bar 1, and they should all be the same length and the same sample rate.

Studio One 6

Our engineers work in Studio One 6 by Presonus so please ensure you bounce the multitrack to audio with all the audio files starting in the same place for synchronization. If your DAW has a normalize option when bouncing, please make sure it is turned off.

Production & Mixing Effects

We ask that you please supply multi-track files dry, without reverb or effects. But, if you feel that a specific effect, processing, or creative element (filter sweeps, delays, etc.) is an integral part of the sound then please provide a clearly labeled ‘dry safety’ version of your track within your ‘Reference Audio Folder’ when you submit your project (any audio in this folder won’t be counted as an additional track).

Revisions

Our online mixing package includes up to 5 revisions. For example, minor tweaks to the balance and effects used within the mix.

Studios

All mixing is carried out in our control room space using some iconic analog gear and the latest plugins in the professional market such as UAD, iZotope, Arturia, Celemony, FabFilter, Black Box Analog Design, Shadow Hills, Maag, Soundtoys, Valhalla and Waves.

Mixing Engineer

For the quickest turn-around, we assign mixing to engineers on a first available basis, and it could be our chief mixing engineer, Leopoldo Lopes, or our mixing engineer, Patricia Rosa. If you want a mix completed by a specific engineer, just let us know – but please be aware it may take longer.

    KNOW MORE ABOUT MIXING

8 DOS AND DON’TS OF MIXING

I often say that there are no rules on mixing, but time has taught me that there are, and some are very important to have a proper commercial song to sound “commercial”. There are some basic elementary rules crucial to having the right mindset when you start a mix, and others when developing that mix up to the end.
